Chapter 5 ~ Reaction

Aunt sighed. I was really surprised I had asked her such a question and she reacted so calmly.

“I had wanted to tell you on your official nineteenth birthday, but it looks like you’ve already figured out the truth.”

“But…. Why did you hide it from me all these years?” I questioned her.

“It was your mother’s instruction to me.”

“Then… what happened to my parents?”

“I don’t know. I know I told you that they were gone in a car crash, and I’m sure you guessed that I was lying to you, and I’m sorry. But the truth is that I really have no idea where they have gone. It’s like they had just disappeared from existence.”

“Are there others like us?”

“Very few. We are a very rare species of vampire and you and I are probably the only ones left in existence, besides your parents. We are able to shapeshift into animals, but each vampire is only able to shapeshift into one animal.”

“What can I shapeshift into?” I was suddenly curious about the shape-shift thing.

“Not even I know, dear. You must find out by yourself.” Aunt smiled.

“What about oka-san? What was she? And my father?”

“Your mother was a massive, beautiful russet wolf. Your father was a big, brown grizzly bear. Both had five times the strength and speed of the real animals themselves.”

My mouth opened and closed like a goldfish and I knew that at that point of time I looked totally weird. It was because I was really surprised. If my mother and father were so strong and so fast, then…..

What were my abilities? Could I run really fast and have impossible strength too?
After all, I was their daughter.

My thoughts trailed away as a new slice of curiosity crept into my head.

What was Aunt’s animal?
I braced myself again and opened my mouth to ask her.

“I was once an eagle. I had the ability to shrink to the size of a hummingbird and grow again to the wingspan of four eagles. I was able to escape danger very easily.
I can still transform into one. But I cannot transform whenever I want to because I will only become the animal when there is a great need to.”

It was no wonder I haven’t really changed into animal form. Because there was no real need to, and I haven’t gotten into any trouble.

I sighed and picked up my homework to do. I slowly made my way upstairs to my room, and threw myself onto my bed to study. I opened up my book, and read about Japanese literature.

But deep inside, I was nowhere near focusing on my work. My mind reeled around the fact that I was one of the rare vampires and wondering where my parents had really gone to. Although I looked completely still and calm, my heart was thumping hard against my chest and mixed feelings filled my mind. There was still so much more to learn about being a vampire.

Then I remembered. I needed to call Yuki to tell her about my new findings. I picked up the phone and dialed her number. I was wondering what to say to her. What if she didn’t believe me when I said that I was one of them?

After five rings, Yuki picked up the phone.

“Ohayo gozaimas?” Yuki answered sleepily.

“ Yuki-chan!” I exclaimed over the phone.

“ Rukia-chan? What happened?”

I told her everything.

“ No… it can’t be… I don’t… I …I…”

“ Relax, Yuki, don’t give yourself a brain haemorrhage.”

“ RUKIA!!! YOU’RE COMPLETELY FINE WITH THIS? THIS IS SERIOUS NEWS!!!” Yuki screamed at me over the phone. I could hear her manager, Saiyurri, fold up her newspaper and ask Yuki what was wrong.

“Nothing,” Yuki lied between her teeth. I could also hear the thumping of footsteps as she made her way to her room and shut the door.

“Rukia? I’m sorry I shouted. But are you serious?” Yuki whispered.

“Yes…” My voice quivered with nervousness.

“Then I guess I have to believe you.”

Yuki believed me just as calmly as Aunt did when I asked her if I was a vampire.

“Just promise me that you won’t tell anyone. Not even Ryuu. The only person you’re allowed to tell is Keiko. Okay?” I told her.

“Okay.”

With that, we sealed our promise.

Note on your Jap usage :) -

it's okaasan since it's a long vowel and you noe when you wake up due to a phone call or smth? Yeh, not so much on the "Ohayo gozaimusu" which means good morning. Normally it's like "Nani desu ka?" Which means "What is it?" Yeh. Just FYI :)
