Speed Questions from A* Math Problem
Answers (without working) are placed in comments.
1) At 9am, Gopal left Village A and drove towards the city at an average speed of 60km/h. 2 hours later, Ali also left Village A and drove along the same route as Gopal. After travelling 270km, Ali managed to catch up with Gopal.
a) What was the average speed at which Ali travelled?
b) How far apart would they be at 3pm?
2) Two motorists, A and B, started travelling from the same end of a road at the same time. They were travelling in the same direction as a cyclist at a distance ahead. After travelling for 6 minutes, Motorist A overtook the cyclist. 2 minutes later, Motorist B overtook the same cyclist. Given that Motorist A and Motorist B travelled at an average speed of 1000m/min and 800m/min respectively, find the average speed of the cyclist.
3) At 7.30am, a bus left Town P for Town Q travelling at an average speed of 60km/h. 15 minutes later, a car left Town Q for Town P. The car reached Town P at 10.45am. The bus reached Town Q at 12 noon.
a) How far apart were the two towns?
b) What was the average speed of the car?
c) How far apart were the two vehicles at 9.45am?
4) A bus, which left Terminal A, was scheduled to reach Terminal B by a certain time. After travelling for 3 hours at its usual speed, the bus stopped for 30 minutes due to an engine problem. In order to reach Terminal B punctually, the bus travelled the remaining journey at a speed of 6.5km/h faster than usual. Given that the bus took 4 hours to cover the remaining journey, find the distance between the two terminals.

1a) Average speed for Ali = 270/2.5 = 108km/h
1b) Distance between Gopal and Ali = 162 - 90 = 72km
2) Average speed of cyclist = 400/2 = 200m/min
3a) Distance between two towns = 60 x 4.5 = 270km
3b) Average speed of car = 270/3 = 90km/h
3c) Distance between 2 vehicles = 315 - 270 = 45km
4) Distance between 2 terminals = (3 x 52) + (4 x 58.5) = 390km
